Often referred to as ‘recession proof’, the beauty industry is flourishing more than ever. And as the demand for beauty treatments grows, with Tik tok and Instagram fuelling an interest in the latest treatments, there’s never been a better time to join this industry. But how can a future therapist get to – and stay – at the top of their game?
It all starts with education and training. There are a huge number of courses out there to choose from, so the first step is to do your research. Look for what qualifications are offered by the academy, whether they offer hands-on experience and the kind of support they offer throughout the course. Over the years, a career in beauty may have been seen as ‘less than’ a degree, but this is certainly no longer the case. With its wide scope to specialise in certain areas of aesthetics, the constant technical and scientific developments being made with every passing year and, of course, the potential earnings these can bring, beauty is big business. Those at the top of the field find renown across not only the industry, but throughout the media and beyond. Machines and products that would never have crossed our minds back 10 years ago are now being made, and it’s not going to stop there! The industry is going to keep growing, new equipment will be invented, products will forever get better and you will always have the opportunity to learn new things to introduce to your business.
Who does the industry attract these days? As an academy, we have seen a huge rise in professionals in the industry going self-employed and starting their own businesses from opening a salon in their garden, mobile massage or opening their own premises. This is extremely empowering for the industry, and it shows that you can excel and be your own boss – which a lot of people thrive to do, especially since Covid. It’s an industry in which people can really be their own boss now, and find their own niche to specialize and grow in.
Whilst quality, continuous education is the foundation of a great career, what really makes the people in this industry shine is their passion. A beauty treatment is more than a cleanse and a mask: it’s the relationship and trust that you build with your clients. A great therapist shows this by adapting to each client to make them feel safe, cared for and listened to, asking questions, remembering the small touches that make them feel special. Combine this with a deep understanding of skin and clients will be coming back for years. This is why a career in beauty is so amazing – it is such a rewarding feeling knowing you have made a difference to that person by making them feel more confident with themselves.
Thinking of joining the industry? If you have an eye for detail, a friendly approach to people and you thrive on always learning, then the beauty industry is the perfect route for you.
